The provincial budget released March 25 committed $269.52 million to funding University of Saskatchewan operations for 2010-11.
“We appreciate the provincial government’s ongoing recognition of the importance of post-secondary education, innovation and research to the future of the province,” said U of S President Peter MacKinnon. “This is a crucial investment in the U of S during challenging economic times.”
The annual grant provides the majority, or about 70 per cent, of the university’s operating funding. Other revenue sources are tuition and investment income.
Specific funding highlights for the University of Saskatchewan include:
- $7.34 million incremental funding for targeted expansion in medicine and nursing programs;
- $12.1 million in sustaining capital funding, which includes additional borrowing capacity; and
- $6.1 million in new and ongoing funding (examples include scholarships, the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron and VIDO/InterVac).
“We will continue to use our proactive and prudent planning processes to manage our costs within our available operating funding, in a manner that is sustainable long-term,” said MacKinnon.
The University of Saskatchewan will now move forward with finalizing its budget. The Board of Governors will set 2010-11 tuition rates in April and will finalize the 2010-11 budget in May.

University of Saskatchewan students make impact at Health Council of Canada Health Innovation Awards
Posted March 19, 2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 19, 2010
2010-03-07-PH
A U of S team of two College of Pharmacy and Nutrition students is the second runner-up in the group category of the inaugural Health Council of Canada Health Innovation Awards.
“This type of recognition for students who are concerned with the current state of the Canadian health- care system is a wonderful validation of the thoughtful and insightful engagement our students have about their world,” says Dean David Hill, College of Pharmacy and Nutrition. “The interest these students exhibit shows that they are willing to take on the tough issues facing health care before they become pharmacist practitioners in the system.”
In fall 2009, the health council challenged Canadian college and university students with the question: "What do you propose to help renew and sustain Canadian health care, and why?"
Melissa Abramovic and Chantal Mougeot entered their submission “Patient and Practitioner Accountability for a Sustainable Health-Care System,” a paper which focused on suggested enhancements to the current system, patient empowerment and practitioner accountability. They wanted to emphasize that reform entails patients having stronger connections to the system designed to serve them, as well as being able to take more responsibility for their own health. The students prepared their submission as part of the requirements for a course in the pharmacy program supervised by Roy Dobson, associate professor of pharmacy.
The Health Council of Canada is funded by Health Canada and its members are the ministers of health in the participating jurisdictions. For more information about this award and photos from the awards ceremony, please visit http://www.usask.ca/pharmacy-nutrition/news/.

2010-03-05-OTHER
The U of S Board of Governors has elected Nancy Hopkins as chair for a three-year term effective July 1, 2010.
Hopkins, a partner in the firm of McDougall Gauley LLP, previously served as vice-chair. She replaces Art Dumont, who was appointed to the board in 2003 and has served as its chair since 2006. Susan Milburn, vice-president of Raymond James Ltd. and a past president of the U of S Alumni Association, was elected to the position of vice-chair for a two-year term.
“It is an honour to be elected by my fellow board members, and I speak for everyone in saying thank you to Art Dumont for both his leadership and his wise counsel,” Hopkins said. “I am pleased to be stepping into this role during such an important time for the institution, both in terms of our growth as a university and the challenges that growth brings. My time on the board has been very rewarding, and I look forward to taking on this new responsibility.”
Hopkins has been a member of the board for six years. During that time, she served as chair of the governance and executive committee, and as a member of the finance and investment committee.
