The federal government will invest $6 million in the new Feed Opportunities from the BioFuels Industries (FOBI) network which will be led by the University of Saskatchewan's Feeds Innovation Institute.
The network of more than 60 researchers across Western Canada will focus on creating higher-quality livestock feed from waste products leftover from the conversion of wheat into ethanol-based fuel, thereby stimulating growth of both the livestock and ethanol biofuel industries.

Two teams have come out as co-winners and will share the $50,000 grand prize in the University of Saskatchewan Industry Liaison Office (ILO) BioVenture Business Plan Challenge.
The winners were announced today by Karen Chad, Acting U of S Vice-President Research. Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food sponsored the BioVenture Challenge $50,000 grand prize.
“The U of S is pleased to work with young graduates who are furthering the value of their research through potential entrepreneurial enterprises,” says Chad. “Their scientific knowledge and business skills have been honed by participating in this competition, which will open the door to great opportunities.”
The winning teams are:
• Patrick Mah is a 2006 U of S commerce graduate who has been working on developing an “in situ bioremediation” process for use on contaminated soil known as “brownfields.” His target market is municipalities and companies that require economically viable remediation solutions. His company, Wave Environmental Technologies Limited, will enable these brownfields to become productive, useful and valuable once again.
• Karthikeyan Narayanan and Zafer Dallal Bashi are U of S PhD students in food and bio-product sciences who are developing a biodiesel plant that utilizes waste vegetable oil as a feedstock. Their company Eco-Oil is based on building a network for waste oil collection and conversion to biodiesel, thereby fostering the development of biodiesel production in local communities.
The five BioVenture Challenge finalists spent the fall receiving coaching and mentorship to refine their business plans. The completed plans were judged by a panel of experts from the ILO and industry.
“We congratulate all five of this year’s finalists for their outstanding effort and exemplary business plans,” said Glen Schuler, ILO managing director. “The ILO looks forward to continuing their support for Patrick, Zafer and Karthi and the other three finalists.”
New Wave Technology and Eco Oil will each receive $25,000 to proceed with their venture while all the finalists will submit their plans to the Saskatchewan Angel Investors Network (SAINT) to consider for future funding.

U of S College of Dentistry Celebrates New Chapter in Dental Education
Posted January 08, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 8, 2009
2009-01-03-DE
The University of Saskatchewan’s College of Dentistry recognized 27 second-year dentistry students today during a white coat ceremony held on campus.
The ceremony marks the transition from the simulation lab to patient care and clinical treatment and, according to College of Dentistry Dean Dr. Gerry Uswak, provides “a moment to reflect and reconfirm the values that the college aspires to, namely, professionalism, ethical integrity, service to society and respect for our patients.” The college operates a full service dental clinic where students, beginning in their second year, treat patients under the supervision of licensed dentists.
In his message to the students, Assistant Dean of Clinical Affairs Dr. Alan Kilistoff noted the white coat is a rite of passage that demonstrates students “have been trained and tried, and found worthy to start treating people.”
During the ceremony, each student of what will be the class of 2011 received a lab coat embroidered with the College of Dentistry crest, donated by the College of Dental Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
The university’s College of Dentistry offers a fully accredited dental program and graduates 28 dentists each year. The College serves the dental needs of the community by providing dental care to patients in its dental teaching hospital and through province-wide outreach programs. While most of the college’s students come from Saskatchewan, spaces are available for students from other provinces or countries. Since 1965 most of Saskatchewan’s dental practitioners have received their undergraduate education at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Dentistry.
