During an event held today at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S), Vice-President University Advancement Heather Magotiaux announced the University has raised $150 million during its five-year Thinking the World of our Future capital campaign.

"The outcomes of the campaign are not only financial," said Magotiaux. "We have built relationships across Canada and beyond. We have seen the excitement, the expectations and the confidence our supporters have for the University of Saskatchewan, and a world of possibilities is now open."

Thinking the World of our Future saw $53 million raised in support of student awards and initiatives, and nearly $40 million directed to research-related initiatives. Approximately 30,000 individuals and organizations contributed to the campaign, with 35% of these from Saskatchewan.

Launched in 2002, the minimum fundraising target for Thinking the World of our Future was $100 million, the most ambitious goal in Saskatchewan's history. Though the $100 million mark was surpassed mid-2006, interest in supporting University programs, students and services never waned. Magotiaux noted the connection the community feels with the University as a result of the campaign will allow the University to build on what's already been achieved.

A final major gift to the campaign from David Sutherland, former CEO of IPSCO Inc., was also announced at the event. Sutherland, an alumnus of the U of S Edwards School of Business, is providing $1 million to support the Edwards School of Business and for enhanced university-wide services for students with disabilities. Sutherland also provided an additional $200,000, outside of the campaign, to the College of Law.

"My relationship with the University of Saskatchewan has always been important to me and my family as the place where our foundation was built," said Sutherland. "We wanted to give back based on our own experiences in a targeted manner, namely to promote a better understanding of international trade, and enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities."

President Peter MacKinnon, who concluded the event, noted the commitment from the community, U of S alumni and donors demonstrated through the campaign has helped the University advance its strategic directions.
