City and Educational Institutions Ask Residents To Take In Student Boarders This Fall

Mayor Donald Atchison, along with Peter MacKinnon (President, University of Saskatchewan), Dr. Robert McCulloch (President and CEO, SIAST), and Mr. Ray Ahenakew (President, SIIT) yesterday called on Saskatoon residents to take in student boarders to help alleviate the student housing shortage this fall.

University of Saskatchewan Library Launches Indigenous Studies Portal

The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) Library has launched a new web-based tool which centralizes Indigenous electronic research resources. The Indigenous Studies Portal, located online at http://iportal.usask.ca, contains over 6,000 full-text reference materials, including books, articles, theses, book reviews, documents, government reports, photographs, archival resources, and maps.
"The Indigenous Studies Portal is a ground-breaking, strategic response to the University of Saskatchewan's plan to play a leading role in Aboriginal education, research and scholarship," said Vicki Williamson, Dean of the University Library. "The project has been a major undertaking, and by year's end we expect the portal's collection to exceed 10,000 entries."
The unique Indigenous Studies Portal is the largest database of full-text Indigenous resources in Canada freely available to students, faculty and researchers. A number of Indigenous Studies theses, not previously available electronically, are also included in the portal.
In conjunction with Student Orientation activities, a celebration of the portal's launch is set to take place at 10:30 a.m., August 30, 2007 at the University of Saskatchewan's Quance Theatre, located in the Education Building. The program will include ceremonies with elders and drummers, and a demonstration of the portal's search capabilities.

University of Saskatchewan Unveils Homecoming 2007 Plans

The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) today unveiled plans for the most extensive all-colleges, all-years reunion ever held in the institute's 100-year history. The three-day University of Saskatchewan Alumni and Friends Centennial Homecoming 2007 takes place September 14-16, with over 50 events, activities, tours, lectures and celebrations.
"With over 120,000 University of Saskatchewan alumni living around the world, and more than 27,000 in Saskatoon alone, Homecoming 2007 provides an opportunity for our alumni and friends to reconnect with one another and with their university," said Heather Magotiaux, Vice-President University Advancement in announcing the plans at a pep-rally like event.
Director of Alumni Relations Melana Soroka provided opening remarks from Nobel Plaza, directly in front of the University's historic College Building. Flanking the stage were a host of University of Saskatchewan students, Huskie Cheerleaders in uniform with pom-poms, and Huskie athletes decked out in their football jerseys.
Vera Pezer, the University's newly elected Chancellor, introduced U of S alumnus and Huskies Head Coach Brian Towriss, who did the official kick-off to Homecoming celebrations by kicking a football into the Bowl.

Thursday September 13:
- A traditional Powwow will be held at the University's Physical Activity Complex.
- Later that day, the Celebrating Our Successes Alumni Awards Presentation and Gala Dinner, hosted by the University's Alumni Association, will showcase the notable achievements of seven University of Saskatchewan alumni.
- An evening lecture features world-renowned primatologist, environmentalist, and UN Ambassador for Peace Dr. Jane Goodall.
Friday September 14:
- The Centennial Golf Tournament takes place at Saskatoon's Riverside Country Club. In the evening, Three Days Grace headlines the Centennial Homecoming Cabaret.
Saturday September 15:
- A Tailgate Party and Huskies Football Game takes place at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.
- That evening the Centennial Celebration Dinner and Dance, hosted by U of S President Peter MacKinnon, will include performances by the Greystone Singers and Amati Quartet in Residence.
Sunday, September 16:
- Homecoming activities conclude with an Alumni and Friends Farewell Brunch.
Following the event, University of Saskatchewan students blanketed the campus and the City of Saskatoon, passing out Homecoming flyers and merchandise.

University of Saskatchewan Represented on Space Shuttle Endeavour

The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) will be well represented on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, scheduled for take-off August 8, 2007 from Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Aboard the Shuttle Endeavour will be a University of Saskatchewan Centennial mission badge and Dr. Dave Williams. Saskatoon-born Williams, a physician and veteran astronaut, received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the U of S in 2004, and is scheduled for at least two space walks during the mission.
The U of S Centennial mission badge, 13 cm X 6 cm, features a green, gold and white University crest on a black background above the special tagline developed to mark the institution's 100th anniversary in 2007 - "100 Years, Engage, Enlighten, Explore."
The badge, hermetically sealed and stored onboard the Shuttle Endeavour, will accompany Space Shuttle Mission STS-118 and its crew on the 11-day journey in space. Upon return to earth, the badge will make its way back to Saskatoon where it will be displayed on campus.
