U of S Celebrates Opening of Cameco Plaza

University of Saskatchewan president Peter MacKinnon and Jerry Grandey president and CEO of Cameco Corporation unveiled a town-hall style clock on campus today to mark the official dedication of Cameco Plaza.

Cameco Plaza, located between the University's Administration and Kinesiology buildings, recognizes and celebrates a $3 million donation from Cameco made earlier this year to the University's Thinking the World of our Future capital campaign.

Cameco's gift provided $1.5 million for a program that provides greater access to engineering and the sciences for Aboriginal students and those living in northern communities; $425,000 for Aboriginal mentorship and support; $350,000 to the NSERC Prairie Chair for Women in Science and Engineering; $125,000 to the Venture Forward entrepreneurship competition program; $100,000 to the Chair in Environmental Toxicology; and $500,000 to help underwrite the costs of the University's campaign.

Speaking to community leaders and representatives from Cameco and the University, MacKinnon said: "Cameco Plaza enhances the University environment by providing a beautiful gathering place for both visitors and the campus community. It signifies Cameco's important partnership with the University of Saskatchewan and will be a lasting reminder of the company's invaluable legacy to the University."

"As a global nuclear energy company based in Saskatchewan, Cameco is proud to work with the University of Saskatchewan to enhance educational opportunities in our home province," said Jerry Grandey. "We believe this ambitious campaign is an exciting opportunity to invest in our community as we work to bring the benefits of nuclear energy to mankind."

The double-faced clock, which stands 10-feet tall, is built of the University's signature greystone with glass plaques on each side bearing the name Cameco Plaza. It can be seen standing at the head of the plaza and is backlit so the clock face can be seen at night from both College Drive and the adjacent walkway.

Following the formal ceremony, University representatives and Cameco guests joined a capacity crowd at Griffiths Stadium for a tailgate party, family activities, and the Huskie football game against UBC. 102 FM, as the official game day presenter, provided live entertainment and music throughout.

Since the Thinking the World of our Future capital campaign was launched, over 25,000 people, corporations and foundations have contributed to its success. Funds raised will enhance the student experience, provide financial support in the form of scholarships and bursaries, and create better opportunities for teaching, learning, research and community outreach. The campaign will continue through the University's centennial celebrations in 2007.
