U of S announces major boost to scholarships

The University of Saskatchewan announced today a $580,000 boost to
undergraduate scholarships aimed at increasing student recruitment and
retention. Approximately 1,000 students will benefit beginning September
2005.

Of the increase, $385,000 will be allocated to the University's existing
scholarship program which will benefit an additional 770 students entering
with a high-school average between 85 and 89.9 per cent. Each will receive a
scholarship valued at $500.

A total of $150,000 will go to new scholarships for students transferring to
the University of Saskatchewan. As well, to assist students participating in
exchange or study abroad programs, the University is also making $45,000
available.

University Provost and Vice-President Academic, Michael Atkinson said: "If
we are to compete successfully with other universities to attract the best
and brightest students, it is essential that we take more aggressive steps
to increase the scholarships we offer. This is an excellent move in the
right direction and an important step in realizing the goals set out in the
University's Enrolment Plan approved last year."

Today's announcement is in addition to the $1.5 million in new scholarships
announced by the University earlier this year. Funding will come initially
from the University's Academic Priorities Fund and, over time, from revenue
generated from leasing University land for the Preston Crossing development.
