Agriculture Dean awarded Fellowship in CSAE/SCGR
Ernie Barber, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Professor of
Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering, was granted Fellowship in the
Canadian Society for Agricultural Engineering (CSAE/SCGR) during the
Society's Annual Meeting in Saskatoon, July 14-17. The award recognizes his
world-renowned expertise, and contributions to, the field of animal housing
and his dedication and skill in teaching and administration.
Professor Barber holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the University of
Alberta and a Ph.D. from the University of Guelph. He joined the University
of Saskatchewan in 1981. Over the past 20 years he has taught a wide variety
of undergraduate and graduate courses (one simultaneously at the University
of Manitoba and the University of Saskatchewan), supervised 15 graduate
students, published more than 100 journal articles, conference
papers/abstracts and technical reports, made nearly 100 conference
presentations, and been involved in approximately 40 research and
development projects.
The quality of his research is reflected in the substantial funding he has
received from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of
Canada (NSERC), and that of his teaching by his receipt of a University of
Saskatchewan Students' Union Teaching Excellence Award in 1996-97. He has
also served on numerous committees both within and outside the University,
and was Head of the Department of Agricultural and Bioresource Engineering
from 1994-1999.
Professor Barber has received three other awards from the CSAE/SCGR, namely
the Maple Leaf Award in 2000 in recognition of his distinguished leadership
in the engineering profession. The John Turnbull Award in 1991 for
outstanding teaching, research or extension in the field of structural
engineering, and the Young Engineer of the Year Award in 1986 are among his
honours.
The designation of Fellow in the CSAE/SCGR has honorary status to which
members of distinction may be elected, but for which they cannot apply. A
Fellow shall be a member of outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and
experience in the field of agricultural, food or biological engineering. A
Fellow shall have been a member of the Society for 10 years and have 20
years of active practice in the profession.
