U of S Board announces new Dean of the College of Arts and Science

U of S Board announces new Dean of
the College of Arts and Science

The Board of Governors at the University of Saskatchewan approved the
appointment of Dr. Ken Coates as Dean of Arts and Science for a five-year,
renewable term, effective January 1, 2001. This appointment was the result
of an extensive, open search for candidates both nationally and
internationally. Dr. Michael Atkinson, Vice-President Academic and Chair of
the Search Committee, said: "Dr. Coates brings a broad range of skills and
experience that will benefit the College of Arts and Science and the
University of Saskatchewan."

Dr. Coates received a B.A. from the University of British Columbia, an M.A.
from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. from the University of British
Columbia.

He has held academic teaching positions at Brandon University, Manitoba; the
University of Victoria, BC; and the University of Waikato, New Zealand.
He has also held a number of administrative positions, including his current
post as Professor of History and Dean of Arts at the University of New
Brunswick at Saint John, which he has held since 1997. Previously, he was
the founding Vice-President Academic at the University of Northern British
Columbia.

Dr. Coates is an historian of Canada with a particular interest in the
history of relations between aboriginal peoples and non-native people.

He has published widely and has research interests in Japanese studies,
indigenous peoples/indigenous-newcomer encounter, world and comparative
history, information technology and society/northern and arctic studies, and
institutional change in universities. He is the recipient of several awards
for his publications including an Award of Merit from the Yukon Museum and
Historical Association for Best Left as Indians and North to Alaska.

Dr. Coates will replace Dr. Tom Wishart who has served as Acting Dean of
Arts and Science for the past two years. On behalf of the University, Dr.
Atkinson, expressed his appreciation of Dr. Wishart?s commitment and flair
while managing the College of Arts and Science during this time.
