Two Saskatchewan Firms Awarded $2.5 Million in
CLS Contracts

The University of Saskatchewan has awarded contracts totaling $2.5 million
to two Saskatchewan-based firms for electrical and interior finishing work
on the $173.5-million Canadian Light Source synchrotron project.

Saskatoon-based Humboldt Electric Limited was awarded a $1.5-million
contract June 20 by the U of S board of governors. The contract includes the
supply and installation of electrical systems including lighting, grounding,
fire detection and cabling systems.

Six bids were received for the electrical contract, all from
Saskatchewan-based companies

A $1-million contract was awarded June 8 to Regina-based Gabriel
Construction Ltd. for the supply and installation of interior CLS building
finishes, walls, flooring, ceilings, doors and hardware.

Two bids were received for the interior finishes contract, both from
Saskatchewan-based companies.

CLS construction contracts to date total $47 million, of which 70 per cent
has gone to Saskatchewan-based companies.

The synchrotron, housed in a stadium-sized building, boosts the velocity of
electrons and creates a light billions of times brighter than the sun. The
light can then be used by industrial and university researchers as a
revolutionary new tool to observe structures and chemical reactions at a
molecular level.

Construction of the $173.5-million national synchrotron facility is on time
and on budget. The CLS will begin operations in January of 2004.

CLS construction is funded mainly by the Canada Foundation for Innovation,
the Canadian government, the Saskatchewan government, the Ontario
government, the University of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon and
SaskPower.
