Engineering students tops again

College of Engineering students placed first in Team Design competition at the 16th annual Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) in London, Ontario.

"I am very proud of these students and their outstanding accomplishment that, once again, highly honors the College of Engineering and the University of Saskatchewan," said Professor Franco Berruti, Dean of the College of Engineering.

Team leader, Erin Moss (Geological), and her teammates; Kyle Dobson (Mechanical), Jeff Wilkinson (Mechanical) and Ben Wagemakers (1st Year), won first place in Team Design.

The Team Design competition involves a group of four participants who must design and implement a project that is divulged only on the day of the event.

Material and tools are provided, and the time for engineering an implementation is limited to four hours. Projects are evaluated for originality of design and prototype, team spirit and presentation.

"The CEC is a prestigious event, they had tough competition from some of the best universities in the country," said University President Peter MacKinnon. "These students are a good example of the continued quality of education received from the University of Saskatchewan."

The CEC is an annual event that challenges 200 engineering students to demonstrate their design and communication skills.

The competitors are finalists from four regional competitions held in Quebec, Ontario, the Western provinces and the Atlantic provinces. As a result, the field of competitors includes the country's most talented students.

The U of S students achieved first Place in the Western Engineering Conference and Competition 2000 in Victoria in January. This placement allowed them to qualify for the national CEC competition.

The CEC is organized entirely by students. It is administrated by the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES) a non-profit organization based in Ottawa that represents all engineering students in Canada.

Sponsors include such well known companies as Nortel Networks, IBM Canada, government organizations such as, the Ministry Of Science, Innovation & Technology, Atomic Energy of Canada, other local corporations as well as many universities from accross the country.
