Televised Agriculture Courses Pilot Year
Comes to a Successful Close
The University of Saskatchewan is completing the pilot year of delivery of
the first televised College of Agriculture degree credit courses in
Saskatchewan. Due to the success of the pilot year, these courses will be
offered again in the 1998-99 academic year.
Approximately 40 students from across Saskatchewan were enrolled in
each of the two agriculture courses offered by television this year.
Agriculture Science I (AGRIC 111.3), which was offered from September
to December 1997, and Agriculture Science II (AGRIC 112.3), offered
from January to April 1998, are required courses for anyone interested in
obtaining a degree in Agriculture.
Using these courses and a selection of Arts & Science courses offered
off-campus, students can complete the courses required for the first year
of a degree in Agriculture at a number of study sites in the province,
including Prince Albert, Yorkton, North Battleford, Melfort, Kindersley,
Swift Current, Estevan and Weyburn. These courses can also be used as
elective courses towards a degree in Arts & Science.
The Extension Division at the University of Saskatchewan has been
offering televised courses in collaboration with the College of Arts &
Science for over ten years, but this is the first time it has offered
classes from the College of Agriculture. The courses are televised over
the SCN training network to study sites located at regional colleges and
SIAST campuses throughout the province. Students in the two Agriculture
courses are located at 17 sites. Students are able to view televised
presentations by the instructor in the studio in Saskatoon, phone in
questions and comments to the studio, and see and hear the instructor's
responses. Students are also able to participate in local projects and
engage in discussion with other students at the sites, or talk to students
at other sites via telephone.
This course is a joint effort between the College of Agriculture, the
Extension Division and the Division of Audio-Visual Service at the
University of Saskatchewan.
