Learning and Resources Center -
College of Pharmacy and Nutrition

Saskatoon, SK, August 15, 1997 -- Novopharm Limited
(Scarborough, ON) has donated $75,000 over a three-year
period to support the Learning and Resources Center within
the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of
Saskatchewan. Mr. David Windross, the Government and
Professional Affairs Director for Novopharm, presented to
then Dean, Dr. Jim L. Blackburn, the first installment of
$25,000 when he was on campus recently lecturing to
pharmacy students.

The Center will provide students access to pharmacy and
nutrition educational, research and practice-based
software packages, CD ROM data bases and internet
resources in the pharmacy and nutrition areas. These funds
will satisfy the high priority need to provide students with
the opportunities and experience to utilize available
computer technology for problem-based learning,
pharmaceutical information and drug literature retrieval.
Facilities will be renovated to eventually house up to 12
computer stations.

The facility will also be connected to the Saskatchewan Dial
Access Drug Information Service at the College which will
allow the resource center to provide information to health
professionals and the Saskatchewan public. Dial Access,
operated by faculty and staff, has provided drug
information service to pharmacists, other health
professionals and the public for over 20 years.

An Ad Hoc Committee has been established and given the
task of completing plans for the unit. The Committee is in
the midst of their work and it is hoped the facility will be
available to students in late 1997 or early 1998.

Novopharm Limited has provided generous support to the
College of Pharmacy and Nutrition in many areas
throughout the years. The last major contribution, in 1993-
94, was for over $56,000 which was allocated to enhance
computer facilities, particularly in the clinical dispensing
laboratory.

Novopharm Limited is one of the largest of the Canadian
generic drug companies, which is owned and operated by
Mr. Leslie Dan, who himself is a pharmacist.
