Civil engineer to receive research award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- October 23, 1996 96-10-14-OTHER Civil engineer to receive research award Professor Delwyn Fredlund of Civil Engineering will be awarded the Distinguished Researcher Award at the Fall Convocation Ceremony on October 26, 1996. The Award, which carries a $1,000 prize, recognizes a U of S faculty memberճ excellence in scholarship. A native of Norquay, SK, who earned his BE degree from the U of S in 1962, Professor Fredlund has become recognized world-wide for his pioneer work and expertise in unsaturated soils theory and technology, which has particular application in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. After completing his post-graduate training from the University of Alberta, he joined the U of S as an assistant professor in 1966 and was promoted to a full professor in 1976. His doctoral dissertation Ѡin which he developed a rational framework for analyzing unsaturated soils ъbecame the cornerstone treatment of unsaturated soils mechanics in geotechnical engineering. Through the International Development Research Centre, Professor Fredlund has developed three exchange programs. He has also worked with CIDA to develop project links with Vietnam and he has served as a consultant to the Government of Hong Kong, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Saskatchewan Highways, and others. Dr. Fredlund has supervised more than 50 MSc and PhD students from Canada and around the world. He believes that international outreach through the training of highly qualified personnel is one of the best forms of foreign aid. In 1993 he was elected Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and in 1994 received the Distinguished Service Award of the Association of Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan. He has also served on NSERCճ Civil Engineering Grant Selection Committee for the last three years.
