Civil engineer to receive research award

Professor Delwyn Fredlund of Civil Engineering will be awarded the
Distinguished Researcher Award at the Fall Convocation Ceremony on October
26, 1996. The Award, which carries a $1,000 prize, recognizes a U of S
faculty memberճ excellence in scholarship.

A native of Norquay, SK, who earned his BE degree from the U of S in 1962,
Professor Fredlund has become recognized world-wide for his pioneer work
and expertise in unsaturated soils theory and technology, which has
particular application in arid and semi-arid regions of the world.

After completing his post-graduate training from the University of
Alberta, he joined the U of S as an assistant professor in 1966 and was
promoted to a full professor in 1976. His doctoral dissertation Ѡin
which he developed a rational framework for analyzing unsaturated soils ъbecame the cornerstone treatment of unsaturated soils mechanics in
geotechnical engineering.

Through the International Development Research Centre, Professor Fredlund
has developed three exchange programs. He has also worked with CIDA to
develop project links with Vietnam and he has served as a consultant to
the Government of Hong Kong, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,
Saskatchewan Highways, and others.

Dr. Fredlund has supervised more than 50 MSc and PhD students from Canada
and around the world. He believes that international outreach through the
training of highly qualified personnel is one of the best forms of foreign
aid.

In 1993 he was elected Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and
in 1994 received the Distinguished Service Award of the Association of
Professional Engineers of Saskatchewan. He has also served on NSERCճ
Civil Engineering Grant Selection Committee for the last three years.
