FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- August 28, 199696-08-05-OTHER
Students can access tuition fee information by phone
Students at the U of S are able to use the U-Star computer system to access information about their tuition and fees owing, payment due dates and payment options.
In previous years, the Office of Business Services issued statements to registered students. U-STAR gives us an opportunity to make the information available to students in a more efficient way, said Bill Sinnett, Director of Business Services. It also enables us to save printing and mailing costs.
Students may access the List Fee and Overdue Information by dialing (306) 938-3900 and selecting either Option 4 on the main menu or by selecting Action Code 9# from the registration menu. In order to protect the privacy of students, callers will have to input both their student identification number and personal access code as they do when accessing other U-STAR functions.
The information is available for all students, (except students in the College of Graduate Studies) however statements will still be issued for students who did not register using U-STAR. Fees for the 1996 winter session are due September 30, 1996 and late fees will be applied after that date.

Student/Parent Orientation
Posted August 22, 1996
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- August 12, 199696-08-02-AR
Student and parent orientation set for September 2 - 3
With numerous concerns surrounding a young person's first experience at a post-secondary institution, many parents are looking for reassurance. An orientation program at the University of Saskatchewan is helping to make parents fell more comfortable about the transition.
The College of Arts and Science and St. Thomas More College will host a day-long orientation Monday September 2 from 9:30 am to 3:00 pm for parents of first year students registered in Arts & Science. Orientation for the students takes place on Tuesday September 3 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
This orientation is designed to give new students and their parents some insight into the demands of post-secondary education. The goal is to prepare students in the areas of college programs, policies and regulations, and for the many personal challenges they will face. Students will spend the morning in general orientation and the afternoon in groups with others in their field of study.
Faculty, along with representatives of the students' unions, and student service groups will be in attendance. For students, it's an opportunity to meet other first year students, and their future professors, said Coordinator Donna Bretell.
This is the fourth year that parents have been included in orientation. Bretell says the Colleges recognize the important role parents can play in their children's academic success. The parents' session deals with the personal aspects of parenting a university student, in addition to providing practical information about the Colleges' rules and regulations.

Changes to Campus Evening Parking
Posted August 22, 1996
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- August 15, 1996 96-08-03-OTHERU of S metered parking changes
In response to a decision made by the University of Saskatchewan Board of Governors, on-campus parking will change in September to include metered parking in the evenings.
Currently, campus meter parking is offered free of charge to users after 6:00 p.m. Beginning September 1, a charge of $1.00 per two hours will be enforced between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday. All meters will allow the user to park for as long as four hours. The daily meter charge is $1.00 per hour and all meters have a maximum of one or two hours during the day.
The change will be implemented with the installation of electronic meters. The existing meters are on the verge of obsolescence, said Dr. A.J. (Tony) Whitworth, Vice-President Administration & Finance. The new meters will allow greater flexibility, both in rates and in maximum time allowed.
Currently, several metered parking areas on campus are not being fully utilized. In addition to being able to change the rate for day and night parking, the electronic meters will also enable those lots to have a three hour maximum, increasing the usage.
The additional fees will recover more of the costs associated with maintenance of the parking lots, related security and administration, said Dr. Whitworth. Any revenue generated above these costs will go to the University's general operating budget.

Major City Watermain Break
Posted August 22, 1996
Late tuesday afternoon a break was discovered at the Water Treatment Plant. This break involved the main input line from the river into the Plant. Repairs began immediately and are still underway. The situation is now SERIOUS and the City of Saskatoon wants to impress on everyone that major difficulties will arise if people do not voluntarily reduce their water usage.
A major reduction in water pressure will result in the course of the next 8 hours if present rates of consumption continue. This reduction in water pressure could affect protective services within the City.
The Water Treatment Plant cannot maintain the current output.
Once you get home this evening, please alert your neighbours to this urgent situation if you see them out watering their lawns or gardens.
Hopefully the situation will be repaired by the end of the wekk, but everyone's cooperation is desperately needed.
Please help inform your family, friends, and neighbours.
